PROJECTS NEGATIVE SPACE SERIES TRYING TO FOCUS ON THAT WHICH CANNOT BE FOCUSED UPON IS A MEASURE OF ONE’S ABILITY TO META-COGNATE THE FOURTH & FIFTH DIMENSIONS. Bringing the ground in front of the work of art is an attempt to bring the periphery into focus without looking directly at it. It’s more of a heightened awareness of what is going on at the edge. With this new series of works I am attempting to make the illusion of the painting or drawing appear to be behind the support on which the art materials rest. I want to make the canvas or paper look as though it is in front of the painting or drawing. I’m suggesting a “push-pull” effect of “planes of space” on which the illusion of deep space is created through over-lapping marks. These shifting planes that come forward and recede are all on top of a ground, like canvas, but take a second look, and it looks like the canvas is in front of these planes of space. Just as one focuses on a subject one become aware of something “out of the corner “ of one’s eye. I want to bring “focus” to that which is in the periphery without looking at it.
